The emerging field of learning analytics offers the promise of using data gathered from interactive learning modules to uncover students' evolving mental models of new concepts. This approach has been successful in understanding learners' conceptual skills in subjects such as math and evolution as well as in medical education. We assigned simulated patient encounters as a part of the first-year curriculum for nurse practitioner and physician assistant students. Detailed data on students' choices within these simulations was collected using xAPI and mined to successfully reveal clinical reasoning challenges among these students.
